JUNE LEE is long time member of the Mountain Homespun Fiber Guild and a committed member of the guild weaving group. Her favorite form of weaving is making colorful wall hangings—tapestries. Using various types of frame looms, she creates whole cloth with thread—and sometimes ribbon, unspun roving, or whatever else will add color and texture to her projects. By using a variety of materials, June creates both the illusion of depth and actual depth. There is an intuitive and meditative quality to June’s method of working, which yields surprising results.
MAKE A MODERN TAPESTRY Beginner to Advanced
Weavers have been making cloth for utilitarian uses for millennia, but they have also made decorative hangings as well—tapestries. These were often woven to tell stories, to record important events, and to just add color and warmth to dark homes in times before electric lights. In making a tapestry colored weft threads are woven through a plain warp, which is then packed down to cover the warp threads.
In this class you will explore this technique working on a simple board loom. Your tapestry can have figurative elements or be abstract. Either way you will find the process meditative as you experiment with the effects that you can create with various materials. While working mainly with a variety of yarns, you can also add other fibers to your work: ribbon, fabric strips, roving, even grass and sticks.
Tapestry making fell out of fashion when factory made textiles became widely available, but it is now having a renaissance due to renewed appreciation of handmade textiles. Join the renaissance!
